Asana - Free Project Management application

Asana, the next big project from one of the team members at Facebook, is a free solution to managing your tasks as a team

The first thing that you’ll notice is that I said that this is a free project management tool. In a world crowded with other options, small business owners might be tempted with having another tool at their disposal without the costs associated with that tool. In that sense, free is a good thing.

Asana is the modern way to work together.  Asana can help you in writing status emails, tracking down updates, and generally doing “work about work.”  Not only can you work faster, you can also take on bigger and more interesting goals.

The application is organized into three panes: On the left are the projects in the current workspace. When you add people to your team’s workspace they get access to all of the projects. In the center is the name of the selected project, and the checklist of tasks in that project. Expand the right pane to edit task details like the assignee, due date, and comments.

Keep your documents online for free

Hard drives can crash and laptops can get stolen, but you can protect your data from any eventuality by storing your files online.

Here are some of the popular options that allow almost limitless storage.

ADrive
URL : www.adrive.com
Adrive offers 50 GB free storage for personal use. After a quick sign-up and verification routine, it loads up a web-interface using which you can view/edit files stored online.

Badongo
URL: www.badongo.com
Badongo is the only one to offer unlimited online storage for free. But there is a catch. Free users have restrictions in terms of downloads per day (4.8GB per day), limited download speed (limited to 500kbps) and no parallel downloads.

Box
URL: www.box.com
Box offers storage ranging from 5 to 50GB depending on how you sign up (A desktop sign up gives you 5GB,but signup using the free iPad app and you'll get 50GB).

DropBox
URL: www.dropbox.com
Dropbox offers 'just' 2GB storage for free - but more space can be earned by inviting friends. The desktop client (Windows/Mac/Linux) seamlessly integrates with the operating system.

SkyDrive
URL: http://skydrive.live.com
Skydrive offers 25GB of free storage and works much like Windows explorer with a folder structure on the left side.

Amazon Cloud Drive:
Amazon Cloud Drive is your personal hard drive in the cloud. Store your music, videos, photos, and documents on Amazon's secure servers. All you need is a web browser to upload, download, and access your files from any computer.

5 GB of FREE online storage
Your Cloud Drive comes with 5 GB of free storage—enough space to store up to 1000 songs. This space is yours to use as you like and you will never be charged for it.

See flight results right on Google.com (US only as of now)

Flight Search results have been available by clicking on “Flights” on the left-hand navigation bar on the search results page, or by going directly to google.com/flights. But we’ve heard from you that you’d like to see more options to find flights and prices even more easily and quickly.

Starting today, we’ll begin showing flight information right in your Google search results on certain flight related searches. For example, if you search for [flights from San Francisco to Las Vegas] you’ll see a table that shows available flights, including duration and prices. You can adjust dates on the page, or click any flight to further research and book your trip.

Over the next couple days, you’ll start to see the flight results appear for searches whose origins and destinations are currently supported by our Flight Search feature. In the short term, those results are limited to domestic US flights. The flight schedule feature will continue to provide information about nonstop routes around the world and across 11 languages.

Once you've booked your flight and are on your way, if you're traveling through one of the many U.S. airports whose floor plans we recently added to Google Maps for Android, you can easily see where you are and what's around you from the convenience of your mobile device. Happy travels!

Now you can call phone numbers from inside Google+ Hangouts..

It wasn’t very long ago that we reported Google was changing its Hangouts function inside of Google+ in a big way. The addition of Extras turned Google+ into a virtual meeting room, classroom and collaboration center. Today that gets even more useful as Google+ Hangouts will now let you make free phone calls, bringing anyone in the US and Canada into your group, no computer required.
According to a post on Google+ by Jarkko Oikarinen, it’s available now by heading to the Hangouts with Extras page. Once your hangout is ready to go, just click Invite, click the Phone tab and put in the number that you wish to call.
While the platform was already powerful, TechCrunch rightly notes that the addition of this feature will open the door to even more uses for Google+.  As we originally noted on the release of Extras, this platform could easily be used for collaborative meetings, and now it’s even more likely since you won’t have to have all of your participants in front of a computer in order for it to happen.
hangouts voice call us and canada 520x327 Now you can call phone numbers from inside Google+ Hangouts
There’s no word yet on when, or if, the free calls feature will go outside of the US and Canada. Since this is likely using the exact same system as Google Voice, you can expect parallel updates to both it and the Hangouts calling feature.
Is this feature enough to move you away from more traditional meeting platforms?

Updating your mobile OS? Remember these

There's an OS upgrade available for your smartphone. Getting tempted to go for the upgrade, but not very sure. Here's an upgrade guide to follow

Know what update offers
Be sure to read what the update offers. It is boring in most cases, but be patient - you need to know exactly what is going to happen to your device after the update.

Check support
If you're content with your device, stick with your current OS. It is unlikely to harm you - do check, however, if the company continues to support it (they generally do).

Know if update works for your model
In most cases, updates work best with relatively newer models - older models sometimes do not get all the new features and may get bogged down.

Take backup
Back up your data. Most updates try to preserve user data (contacts, photos, videos), but they can go wrong.

Charge your phone
Charge your phone before updating (or plug in the charger) - updates need battery.

Save warranty
If you value the official warranty, get updates from official sources - unofficial ones can work but they do tend to void warranty and support.

Fuel 2050: Bye, Bye petrol

Conventional fuels are only bound to get more expensive, and that's where Dr Greg Offer comes into the picture. "In the short term, over the next decade, it will be hard for any new fuel sources to challenge our dependence on oil, except biofuels, but they have limits. However, in the long term, within 50 years, it appears to me that it is inevitable that electricity will take over. We don't have a choice, " he says. Buying that Rewa seems like a sound investment now.

Offer, who teaches at the Imperial College of London, states that the rise in oil prices is a straight offshoot of the developing world aspiring for the same level of mobility that the developed world enjoys. "In the long term, beyond 2020, we must shift to alternative fuels such as electricity (whether via batteries or hydrogen doesn't matter), or face declining living standards in richer countries and limits to development elsewhere.

1.97 Billion Internet Users Surf 266 Million Websites Worldwide

The Internet is probably one of the most impacting, most influential phenomena to affect our lives on a global scale in the last 50 years. Nothing is more pervasive, so intrusive, yet it stands as one of the tools us as modern peoples consider ‘indispensable’. Few of us can appreciate the scale of the internet without taking a look at the actual numbers that underpin its use.

When you dig deep into the numbers, a picture of an all-conquering beast begins to emerge—a beast that is evolving almost at the speed of light and forever changing how we live our lives each day. One popular website that tracks these numbers is onlineschools.org, and it’s revealed some startling stats about the internet. There are for instance, over 1.97 billion internet users. These users collectively surf over 266 million websites each and every day.

Of course these numbers are always growing and every 1000 seconds or so, over 4,500 internet users are added to the pool. Each minute over 350 new websites come online. With these staggering dynamics, one can see how the internet ran out of space recently and had to introduce a new standard called IPv6.

The one thing that isn’t clear about the internet is where it’s going. In an eerie sense one can’t help wondering if it may involve into a conscious mind; annihilating human kind much like the ‘Skynet’ super-computer of the Terminator movies.

500px's ipad app now lets you follow your favorite photographers

The photography community 500px just updated its free iPad app, the company has announced. As we reported a few months ago, professional photographers have been leaving Flickr in droves to join 500px before it had a mobile app, and the 1.3 version of its iPad app should boost its popularity even further.

The new features 500px introduced today come in addition to the large range of options already included. One new feature that photographers will particularly appreciate is the possibility for users to see their profile and to follow them.

But it’s not just about exposing your pictures; 500px is also a great way to discover great photographs and photographers – particularly when you’re using a tablet:

According to 500px, the iPad is a perfect fit for photography, and its app has been doing particularly well. With over 100,000 downloads in the first week of release, it has been the top free photo app for iPad in all App Stores, the startup said.

Once they download it, people use 500px app quite intensively; according to the company, its US users flip through more than 100 photos per visit, spending more than 40 minutes in the app daily.

Indeed, 500px’s app lets users browse between its Popular, Upcoming and Editors Choice streams. Users can also search pictures by keyword, share photos and and add them to their favorites. Although the app works very well as a passive browsing experience, it also caters to advanced users, who can create slideshows and view EXIF data to improve their photography skills or geolocate photos more accurately.

500px is also increasingly connected to other apps: it now has a public API, and a Lightroom plugin lets pros upload photos right from Lightroom. As we reported, Flipboard also recently integrated 500px, which will likely help the community to become even more popular.

Microsoft planning deadly cheap version of Office for the iPad

According to sources leaking to the Daily, Microsoft has a version of its popular Office suite of productivity apps under production for the iPad.

Microsoft, bringing Office to the iPad, is crossing the frozen DMZ that separates its products from the Evil Empire (from its perspective), Cupertino. Microsoft has ignored the iPad largely as a commercial opportunity, and perhaps for too long. Office is a massively lucrative portion of the Redmond realm, and given the huge install base that Apple can boast in regards to its slate, it could earn even more if it was released for iOS.

Of course, Microsoft has its own tablet operating system in the works, but for now the iPad reigns supreme, and almost alone, so the move to create Office for iOS, as the company has for OS X, is not too surprising.

All of this is well and good, and rather feasible, but what is most unusual is this: “In fact, it’s likely the cost will be around the $10 price point that Apple has established for its Pages, Numbers and Keynote products.” To phrase it another way, Microsoft is about to drop a half-ton of wet cement on to Apple’s productivity applications that have, thus far, been supreme. Apple’s offerings are not amazing, mind you, but they are the most popular, assuredly.

Office is popular on both Macs and PCs because it’s a quality product. If the iOS edition can match the normal version in performance, and crucially, usability, then it could be a hit. In fact, it could be a beachhead for other salable Microsoft products on the tablet. Of course, it will be taken as an early indication of how well Microsoft ‘gets’ touch, heading into Windows 8.

If the iOS edition of Office lacks, it will cast a pall over the prospects of Windows 8; if Microsoft can’t get this right, how can it handle an entire operating system?
