1.97 Billion Internet Users Surf 266 Million Websites Worldwide

The Internet is probably one of the most impacting, most influential phenomena to affect our lives on a global scale in the last 50 years. Nothing is more pervasive, so intrusive, yet it stands as one of the tools us as modern peoples consider ‘indispensable’. Few of us can appreciate the scale of the internet without taking a look at the actual numbers that underpin its use.

When you dig deep into the numbers, a picture of an all-conquering beast begins to emerge—a beast that is evolving almost at the speed of light and forever changing how we live our lives each day. One popular website that tracks these numbers is onlineschools.org, and it’s revealed some startling stats about the internet. There are for instance, over 1.97 billion internet users. These users collectively surf over 266 million websites each and every day.

Of course these numbers are always growing and every 1000 seconds or so, over 4,500 internet users are added to the pool. Each minute over 350 new websites come online. With these staggering dynamics, one can see how the internet ran out of space recently and had to introduce a new standard called IPv6.

The one thing that isn’t clear about the internet is where it’s going. In an eerie sense one can’t help wondering if it may involve into a conscious mind; annihilating human kind much like the ‘Skynet’ super-computer of the Terminator movies.
